Artist Statement
Since childhood I have always loved to draw and paint, it is the way in which I engage and learn about myself and the world around me. I see painting as a magical place where I can play and evolve, creating my own visual language, histories and fictions. I get lost within the paint itself.
Source material and images find me randomly or I find them. A starting point for a work may be an image or a certain colour of paint. Decisions are made intuitively, there are no plans as such, I may cut a stencil or realise a form with spray-paint in a dot-to-dot fashion. I then use contrasting and clashing colours together with gestural marks to sculpt something on the surface of the canvas. Accidents happen within this process and are embraced.
My current work is predominantly made with spray-paint using a dot-to-dot dripping technique where I rotate and manipulate the canvas physically. I find using a combination of acrylic spray-paint and acrylic brushwork I can paint quickly and freely with little drying time. This process has grown from being completely non-figurative into a way of plotting and transforming new figurative elements. These forms then generate word games and visual puns within my mind and evolve into narrative ideas. Recent themes have emerged around learning systems and childhood, myth and magic, history and respect.
